Best Sex Positions Explained: Which One Works for What Your Body Needs
Most couples have a default position and a backup. Neither was consciously chosen. One just worked well enough once and became the template; the other is used when the first does not feel quite right. This is not a criticism. It is just the way most people arrive at their sexual repertoire: by accident and habit, rather than by any actual understanding of what different positions do for different bodies.
Each position has a specific anatomical effect. It determines which part of the vaginal wall receives stimulation, whether the clitoris gets any contact, how deeply the cervix can be reached, and how much control each partner has over angle and rhythm. Understanding those effects turns position choice from guesswork into something more useful.
The Positions and What They Actually Do
Position 01
Missionary
Best for: Emotional connection, eye contact, clitoral stimulation when modified.
Standard missionary directs penetration toward the back vaginal wall, which has fewer nerve endings. The modification that changes everything: the penetrating partner shifts their body 2 to 3 inches upward (the Coital Alignment Technique), so the base of the penis or toy grinds directly against the clitoris throughout. This position also allows the penetrating partner to add manual clitoral stimulation, and provides the closest physical contact of any position. A pillow under the receiving partner's hips shifts the angle significantly toward the more sensitive front wall.
Position 02
Woman on Top
Best for: G-spot stimulation, orgasm control, depth and angle control.
The most reliable position for female orgasm during penetration. The receiving partner controls all variables: depth, angle, rhythm, and clitoral contact. Leaning slightly forward creates more G-spot stimulation. Leaning back creates deeper penetration. Upright creates the most clitoral friction against the penetrating partner's body. This is also the position that most clearly shows what a woman's body actually wants, making it one of the best for partners to observe and learn from.
Position 03
Doggy Style
Best for: G-spot and A-spot stimulation, deeper penetration, less eye contact.
Naturally angles penetration toward the front vaginal wall where the G-spot and A-spot are located, making it anatomically ideal for internal stimulation. Depth increases significantly; those prone to cervical discomfort should communicate openly about depth. The receiving partner can adjust how much stimulation they receive by changing the arch of their back: lower chest and higher hips increases front-wall contact. The penetrating partner has easy access to reach around for clitoral stimulation, making this position highly adaptable.
Position 04
Spooning
Best for: Intimacy, morning sex, lower energy, pregnancy or post-birth.
Both partners lie on their sides, penetrating partner behind. Shallow penetration, very close full-body contact, and low physical demand make this ideal when energy or comfort is a priority. The penetrating partner's hand naturally reaches around to the clitoris. The slow, rocking rhythm that works best in this position is also closer to what produces clitoral orgasm than in most other positions. Often underestimated for pleasure; frequently preferred for closeness.
Position 05
Legs Up Missionary
Best for: A-spot stimulation, deeper front-wall contact.
Receiving partner lies on their back and draws knees toward chest, or rests legs on the penetrating partner's shoulders. This shortens the vaginal canal and lifts the cervix, bringing the A-spot region into range. Slow, deliberate strokes with sustained pressure work better here than fast thrusting. Requires the receiving partner to be fully aroused before beginning. Plenty of lubrication essential.
Position 06
Edge of the Bed
Best for: Angle flexibility, combined penetration and oral stimulation, novelty.
Receiving partner lies at the edge of the bed, penetrating partner stands or kneels. This allows easy angle adjustment, full access for manual or oral clitoral stimulation, and a different physical dynamic that can break routine without requiring acrobatics. The penetrating partner has both hands free throughout, making it one of the most practical positions for dual stimulation.
The Principle That Applies to All of Them
No position works as well as it could without sufficient arousal beforehand. The anatomy changes significantly between unaroused and fully aroused states: the clitoris engorges, the vaginal walls become more sensitive, the canal lengthens, and internal pleasure points become more accessible. Spending adequate time on foreplay before any penetration begins is not a courtesy. It is the difference between a position working well and barely working at all.
Pay attention to what your partner does with their hips when they are on top. They are not doing it at random: they are showing you the exact angle and rhythm their body needs. Try to replicate that in any other position you use together.
The best position is not a fixed answer. It is whatever produces the most sensation for the specific bodies involved, on that particular day, at that particular level of arousal. Asking your partner what they want, and being willing to adjust in real time, is more useful than any list of positions. Use this as a starting map, not a destination.
